Because I never heard a crackheaded idea I didn't like...this challenge comes out of [livejournal.com profile] helenish's LJ, where she proposed a Post Secret Challenge, Post Secret being the site where people send in postcards of their terrible, melodramatic secrets. To quote Helen:
If there isn't an SGA Post Secret Challenge, there should be, just because I think, especially Sheppard is all about super dramatic secrets like "I keep letting women fuck me because I don't know how to say no." and "I've tried to kill myself sixteen times and it never works." and "I've never had good sex." and "Everyone else worries about the people they left behind, but I can barely even remember their names." and all of Rodney's would be like "I'm worried I won't win a Nobel Prize until I'm too old to care." and "No one believes me when I say I can't do things. I'm starting not to believe it myself." and Teyla's would all be "All my coworkers secretly want to fuck me." and "I hate my job but the stars say it's my destiny." and Ronon's would be all "I'm a wraith spy."

Okay, not really. His would probably be all "I don't say much because it helps me get laid more often."
Really, can you resist this? I can't resist this. Not even a bit. (Look! My icon--it's a John Sheppard secret! {quail with love!})

So, spill your guts, people! It's Saturday, February 11th, and we'll hold this challenge open until Saturday, February 26th at midnight eastern.

Extra special Admin Message: As a test, I'm going to try TAGGING this entry as Post Secret. Would everyone please tag their entries as well? We'll see if/how that works, but honestly: nobody should have to archive 82 flashfiction stories, especially not me!

Edited to add: The challenge has been broadened to encourage fic inspired by people's postcard responses. If you do not want anybody writing fic about your postcard, please note so in your entry--i.e. "No fic please," or "Not eligible for fic" Also, if you could, perhaps indicate if your entry is a picture or a story--our friends on dialup are having issues with the pictures but want to be sure to read stories. Thanks for your courtesy!

Okay, this may be a time I'm interested in actually writing for SGAFF, not just reading.

I'm wondering though, are you wanting it to be a new Post Secret, with letters the SGA folk would send or is it more dealing with the secrets themselves? I guess I mean to say, fic or pic?

If you can clear this up, I thank you muchly.

It might be useful to have two tags, ces -- author and challenge name (isn't that how you archive in memories?)

Not easier than clicking on a tag though, right? And for not a whole lot more effort (putting in a second tag), you get double the searchability.

I'll put this to you as well: if you click on our first tag here, how do you get to entries that are further than 20 back?
While I agree that tagging them with the usernames here might be convenient as well esp. if the authors don't have a clearly labelled site or memories section, tags don't seem to work that well. Happy to be proven wrong.

i was gonna offer when you spoke about memorying in your lj...until i realized it was ds :-)

i happily volunteer putting the stories in the memories after the challenge's over (or even during)...between the newsletters i spend so m,uch time with memories, i've gotten quite fast at it...

See below. Unless I'm blind, there's something preventing more than 20 entries to show up.
I agree that tagging is not as reliable as well, one typo and the entry ends up in the sgs list.

post secret = best idea EVER

May I make a challenge suggestion? What about a kid!fic challenge? The Atlantis crew having kids, looking after kids, when they themselves were kids, acting like kids, kidding around, alien goats...

Hm. When I click our current tag, I can't find the option to list all such tagged entries, only the 20 or so it gives me on the single page. Tell me I'm blind? Because if I'm not, that's damn inconvenient!

this is a layout-specific problem. with most layouts you'll get the same back/forward options as that layout's 'recent entries' page for navigating multiple pages of tags. i don't know if there are overrides for s1 styles that can tweak the community's tag page or if it would be necessary to switch to an s2 style for full tag support here.

That makes sense! I thought sga_flashfic already moved to s2, though.

you may very well be right, the style doesn't look as high-maintenance as the s2 styles i'm familiar with so i was assuming it was s1. if it is s2 then i think they just need to have someone tweak the code for the tag page to add in page navigation.

i should have started that first sentence with "i'm pretty sure...". i'm definitely not an expert on the lj style system.

Oh definitely! I agree it's a lot of work for you, and if I had time, I'd volunteer to help you as well (maybe next month).

Even if it works, someone probably ought to check the tags though if they replaced memories. Then again, that's just as much work *wry grin*

With the insane amount of postcards that we're getting (and they're all fabulous!), I thought that maybe the next challenge could be to write flashfic about secrets that have been revealed. Expound a little more on how that secret came to be, or what would happen if the secret got out?

Just a thought.

Maybe you could post something moddy to that effect... I think we're all hung up on just doing the cards for now, since that's what the challenge is specifically on.

I certainly wouldn't mind if someone ran with a card I made a did a fic on it, and I know that there have been several by others that make me want to write. :)

any chance you could introduce some sort of guideline just for this challenge that limits the number of seperate posts one person can make in a 24 hour period?
