I really like the second one, someone should write that. But for some reason, I'd really like to read a fic where John has a son who's in twenties. Or at least over 18.
I was definitely thinking about biological son or daughter. But yeah, your idea is interesting that s/he would come to live with their father after their mother has died or something. It's just that under the circumstances people live at Atlantis now, I don't think it's very plausible that the kid would come there. Never mind that their other parent is dead.
Unless they have something to contribute, which means s/he would need to be somewhat adult. And they'd need to be very smart to come to Atlantis in the first place. Also, I'm not sure if their father would let them come, since Atlantis is pretty dangerous place.
There's lots of things to consider, so that the story makes sense and is plausible. However, you should not feel discouraged by what I said, sometimes it's a good idea to take a plot bunny and just run with it. :)
If the daughter/son were over 18 they could be in the military. Inheriting John's gene could be a reason for them being assigned there. If said parent didn't want them in harms way, that could lead to juicy conflict.
Or, if it were set a few years in the future, when things might be safer and families allowed to join the expedition, like on Star Trek.
True, I didn't think the military part at all. I think that if the SGC were willing to send an 18 year old to Atlantis, their gene would have to be something pretty spectacular. There's also the conflict of interest thing - John being his or her father and their commanding officer.
If the military kid was Rodney's, then there wouldn't be the conflict of interest problem. But Rodney doesn't have the gene naturally... unless the Ancient gene is recessive.
Yeah, the military would probably be the most plausible reason the kid would come to Atlantis.
As much as I love Star Trek, I'd hate to see SGA turn into that. :D Though Beautiful Lifetime Event was pretty excellent and that happened in Star Trekish universe.
I agree, it would be interesting to see. I hope someone writes this!
I'd be interested in reading that. I have trouble seeing McKay voluntarily adopting a child, at least while he was on Earth, but it would be just like him to 'accidentally' fall into it somehow. Or maybe it's an, ahem, unexpected child.
I've noticed people tend to write John and Rodney with daughters and not sons, and have wondered why. Maybe they just seem the types to get totally wrapped around a daughter's fingers.
There's a great AU where John helps Rodney's sister have a baby and Rodney ends up adopting her. It's 'Small Primes and Square Roots' by Livia. I can find the URL for you if you haven't read it. It's terrific!

It'd be interesting to see if it could work.
