Major Marcus Lorne twirled the dandelion-like flower with his fingers. They looked very alike, practically identical, to the dandelions that would grow in his parents’ back yard, well… The few that made it past his mothers ferocious pre winter weeding. But this wasn’t Earth; this was Halen, an alien planet in an alien galaxy, so these dandelions were probably, well… alien. ‘I’ll have to ask David about that’ the soldier entertained the thought for a brief second. The few plant related question he’d asked Parrish always resulted in half hour lectures on the miracle of photosynthesis or concepts too complex for him to grasp. He remembered the last time they had a joint mission with SGA1 like today’s, Dr. McKay was half way through an Astro-physics rant directed at his CO, while Parrish was much more quietly explaining how the local indigenous plant life survived on only three hours of sunlight a day. He was relieved to see the blank stare of complete and utter bewilderment on Sheppard’s face as he ignored the angry Canadian in front of him.
“Do you think if we back away slowly, they’ll stop?”
The comment had stalled McKay in his tracks and while he drew breathe and started complaining about the dire results of not listening to him, Lorne took more notice of his own scientist, who had smiled at the other soldier’s comment, before quietly melting into the back round. That troubled him more than anything else, bar when he was excited over a plant, David… Dr Parrish was much too quiet for Lorne’s liking. The man was brought out of his reverie by the sound of heavy footsteps making their way to him.
“Okay Major, Teyla and Ronan are scouting out the area, McKay wants to check out the ruins. I’m bringing Lt. Cadman along in case we need rescuing. Place seems quiet but keep an eye on Dr Parrish.”
“Yes sir.”
Lorne didn’t need to be told, the same way Colonel Sheppard didn’t have to ask. They both knew the other man kept more than just a watchful eye on “their” scientists, but as long as the rules were the rules, the truth would not be spoken. Marcus watched the other man’s retreating form, thankful for a peaceful mission and nice warm planet to conduct it on. He plucked a dandelion from the soft ground and ambled the hundred or so metres to where David…Dr. Parrish… his scientist, was absorbed in a copse of bushes and brambles. It still worried him that he could walk right up to the man and he wouldn’t notice ‘till Lorne was on his hunkers, lips inches from his face. He handed him the dandelion, all the seeds were still intact. He had too many wishes to blow them all out. Most of them didn’t matter enough to spoil the flower for the other man, he would want “the intact specimen” to study.
“Here, I got you this, you know… To study.”
The smile was enough to keep him happy, even though he knew that leaving his quarters every night would take it from the other man’s lips.
