Title: MVP (74k) Author: Speranza Pairing: Sheppard/McKay Postcard: here Summary: "All right, all right, nothing to see here," he heard Sheppard say. "You've seen one giant snake, you've seen 'em all."
This was just lovely - I really enjoyed Rodney's realization process about how Atlantis views John, which is one of the things I wish canon would do more with. (But canon wouldn't give me hot gay sex, which I also liked, of course *g*)
I have read this several times, so I finally need to tell you how much I adore this story. I love the misunderstanding so much - the way John says he'll take care of Rodney and Rodney is in shock and lets it all happen. And this is one of my favorite exchanges:
"I can't!" John shouted, red-faced. "I can't! God, I'll go out of my mind—"
"Yes! Right! Exactly!" Rodney yelled back. "I know just how you feel!"
YAY!! And you picked my most happymaking line! (Er, I love that exchange. It's so much show and it never tells a thing. Yes, I'm alone over here, don't mind me!) Anyway, thank you thank you!
Oh my god, this was amazing. Rodney reading John's file, John being all self-sacrificing Dean Winchester-y. I couldn't stop noticing how perfectly they way Rodney called John (both in dialogue and narrative) reflected how he saw him - Sheppard, John, John Sheppard, Colonel. And the ending! Rodney's "Dude!"! So, so awesome :-)
I was watching SGA S4 today -- I assume I'm one of the last to see this episode, since I'm in the US and I waited for it to actually be on tv, but if this is a spoiler for anyone, I apologize -- and it was the one where Atlantis finds a new world. A world where the mainland is filled with dangerous, venomous snakes. Wait, I thought, I've read that story! It's MVP by Speranza! Next week we'll be finding out that the snakes mostly come out at night, and the show will be making St. Patrick references! You should totally get a story credit for that ep!
OMG, I don't think I've seen this yet, but I'm chuffed ANYWAY! It's a gimme! (I'm actually writing another snake world now, but they're smaller and nicer!)
You know, there's nothing quite like revisiting an old story when you're having a crappy morning - sinking into that familiar space, knowing what's coming but reveling in the way the tale's told and the characters interact nonetheless. This was, as ever, brilliant, and if there's anything I love quite so much as a John and Rodney mad with worry about each other, I've yet to find it. Thank you ♥
I love this story, great characterisation. I love your John with a self-destructive streak and being with Rodney has changed that in him, the ending is perfect, John finally learned to stop taking unnecessary risk.
Thank you so much for the comment! I, er, also really love a reckless John, and think that maybe, if he had the love of a good man, he'd value life more. *g*
Oh! And P.S.! The structure and pacing of your stories is always such - just a pleasure, they're invisible but most definitely there. There's some analogy that would fit this perfectly and of course I'm too zonked to think of it. Anyway, yes, your structure is amazing (especially as I could teach a class on it but never manage to work a plot or even a reasonable facsimile into my own writing).
You know, this is the reread story for me. The voices seem spot on, especially Rodney's thoughts and John (incomprehensible to Rodney t times) weird expressions, and the sex is hot like burning, and the bad days they have could be in the show. Seriously.
Possibly I have commented before, after one of my previous reads. I don't care, I had to say how much I love it this time.
Oh, I'm so glad. I just--I really love stories where John's a puzzle like this. And Rodney, man: Rodney's GOOD at puzzles. *g* (Though not as good as we fangirls are; I think we figure out loads of stuff befor Rodney does, you know?) Anyway, I'm so glad it's the reread story for you. HAPPYMAKING.
I'm just stopping by to say, if I haven't already said it before, that this is one of my favorite stories and I've lost count of the number of times I've read it.
This line still makes me laugh every time: "I've heard that on some planets, simple machines are found in nature," Rodney explained to no one in particular.
Really, that whole section with the rope and the pulley and "Sometimes screwdrivers grow on trees, and it turns out that nobody at all invented the wheel—" Classic Rodney.
But I just love John and Rodney's dysfunctional relationship here, with John trying so hard, and Rodney so angry because he's scared John's going to do something stupid and die. It just pushes so many of my buttons.
Just, thank you so much! MVP just makes me want to smoosh Rodney to DEATH; he's so long suffering. As I like to say: Rodney McKay, Most Realistic Woman on television. There just aren't enough words to express the LOVE in my HEART.

... So, obviously incoherent. Needless to say, great fic. *runs off, grinning*
