This was a long fic, the flip-side of Gay Me Up.
But I like the punch of the bare-boned nucleus.

Out Of Reach


He couldn’t stop him.

There had been passion and pleasure, brief by its very nature.

There had been mutual affection, he was sure of that.

It wasn’t enough.

John didn’t love those women, but then love and affection didn’t matter; passion and pleasure even less so.

John might have loved Rodney, but shared moments could not make up for the weight of the world.

It was no use when Rodney shouted he’d only be shouldering another burden. It was no use that he tried every argument, and then everything that couldn’t be said with words.

Rodney realised that ascending wasn’t as cool as he’d thought when the coolest guy he knew decided otherwise.
