Title: Beautiful
Author:one reverie
Pairing:Rodney/John
Warning: There is a warning; scroll to the end if you don't wish to be surprised.
Summary: Rodney reflects (it's really too short for a summary)

Beautiful

It’s cold. Rodney inches closer to John, pulling him forward, needing warmth. He’s face to face, both of them wrapped in blankets, and stares at John. There’s a wisp of hair hanging more out of place than the others, and McKay lifts a finger, brushing it away, to somewhere else. John’s eyes are green tonight; hazel, mercurial, temperamental, changing with seeming irreverence. Rodney feels lost in them. Someone stopped time, put him in a bubble, and didn’t tell him.

Rodney doesn’t want to feel this way. He stares at John’s stubble, the strong chin that promises more than it can deliver. The lines of John’s face, symmetrical. It is the aphrodisiac of attraction. Symmetry in a face makes one desirable. Rodney’s always smiled crooked, walked crooked. It’s why he never understood why John was interested. Rodney never did anything with symmetry…except John.

“I didn’t want to love you,” he whispers. He was Rodney McKay, asshole, and general malcontent. Until John. John tempered his bluntness, guided his frenetic energy, provided an outlet for Rodney’s enthusiasm. Now, instead of being a jerk, he merely dabbled in it.

The lines of John’s body under the blanket are lines Rodney is sure he has memorized. The hands that had guided a Jumper with the same surety as they had guided Rodney to equal heights were slightly curled now, peeking through the material.

He really was beautiful. Rodney’s hand slips from beneath his blanket, to John’s, and he fumbles until he’s holding on. No one can see, and besides, it doesn’t matter now, anyway. Not to him. John’s hand isn’t gripping back. It’s cold.

Warning: This is a character death.

Beautiful, but very sad. I wasn't sure at the start if John was with us or not, but it became clear with that last line.
Very sad.

Um. I knew it when you said you put the warning at the bottom.

I was hoping I was wrong, though...

Great story. Definitely sad, though it doesn't seem that Rodney's much longer for the world either, which is in an odd way comforting. Thanks.
