Litany
Every night and every morning, Teyla said the words as if they were prayers, phrases a mother says to a child to guide and comfort them. Some nights, she said them with more force than others.
Today, John Sheppard had bruises under his long sleeves, because Teyla had been just a touch harder than usual in his work-out. She enjoyed knowing about the bruises and how he moved a little more stiffly than usual because she had done this. She'd enjoyed giving them, too, and his childlike complaints.
They were all such children, these descendants of the Ancestors - ill-raised and rude, but generous and trusting at the same time. So very trusting - look at how they'd opened their city and their hearts to her and to the Satedan.
Children with toys they didn't understand - a wise mother would have taken them away. Teyla wished she could do the same - they hurt themselves, they hurt others. Dr. McKay's stubborn curiosity destroyed so much.
Sometimes she and Ronon didn't understand how they ever managed to survive as long as they did. Dr. Weir said that they'd been in isolation on their planet until a few years ago - perhaps that was it, although they fought so much within themselves that Teyla wondered.
Here, though, they needed someone to take care of them, and Teyla - she knew what she had to do. So she trained with Sheppard, and helped them trade for what they needed and to find allies.
And if she went into a private conversation with a local friend, no one would ever notice. And if she hit them a bit harder in training, no one thought twice. And if she and Ronon understood that things were not as they should be - well, he wasn't telling anyone.
One day, though, they would find out, and things would be as they were, and as they should have been.
Dr. Weir had placed her in control of the city when she had been called to her planet, and there had been no one else she'd trusted - or so she said. Teyla called her "Elizabeth" and kept it safe this time.
This is what she would do, even if it hurt. Even if it made the final goal harder because they were children and this was not how you treated children.
"They woke the Wraith. They stole the city of the Ancestors. They exiled my people from Athos. They brought war and death to our galaxy. They will pay." They would pay. And they would pay soon.

Date: 2006-07-20 09:35 pm (UTC)Oh my goodness, this is so plausible that it's disturbing. I'll be watching 'misbegotten' with a closer eye on Teyla because of this.
Well done!
