Title: Resurrection Girl by Gategrrl
Rating: PG
Length: short
Character: Elizabeth Weir
Disclaimer: don't own 'em, never expect to make money off them either!
Note: an idea that's been simmering for a while. this is the short version.
Summary: She supposed she ought to tell someone about the resurrections, but she wasn't sure anyone would believe her.
When her double from another reality died, Elizabeth had no reason to think that the event was anything special. She admitted that although the woman who died was *her* (pretty much) it was special to her, therefore, yes, it was unique. She thought about the Other-Elizabeth off and on. She never forgot about her Other-Self; that would have been expecting too much. Dr Heightmeyer talked to her about the existential angst related to the Other-Elizabeth's death, and that was the end of the matter, more or less.
And then Wraith invaded Atlantis, and she died. She knew she'd died. She *remembered* herself living through it, and dying.
And then the Genii invaded Atlantis, and Kolya sliced her neck open. She remembered that also. Vividly.
And when she went to that Ascension planet Sheppard had been trapped on, the one with the time bubble, she remembered being torn apart by the monster that roamed there. She remembered every single moment of that.
Then there was the time -- well, suffice to say, she'd died lots of times. And she recalled every single event clearly. But no one else did: it was as if time was reset, and she had an opportunity to redo the events leading up to it. Even when Atlantis exploded from an accident on the Daedalus, everything went back to normal, and she was able to make sure McKay was there at the right place at the right time to fix the problem with the reactor.
She supposed she ought to tell someone about the resurrections, but she wasn't sure anyone would believe her. And at all costs, she felt she had to remain at the helm of Atlantis. She never knew when the next disaster would happen. And she felt if she lived through another death that saved others, she could live with it. But each time was like the first time...and she wondered about that Other-Elizabeth. She had found a way to circumvent this power of resurrection. Maybe she outlived it.
Michael captured her and a bunch of others in a quick foray while Elizabeth lead a peacekeeping mission on a planet with a duplicate of Atlantis on it. She found herself wishing he could finish her killing. But, she resurrected, and once again she had flesh on her body, and her soul intact. Or as intact as it could be, after so many confrontations with death. She began the steps to avoid Michael on the next round. He succeeded twice more before she managed to change the time. She began cursing him. Cursing herself.
She'd won. But she was wrung dry from the battle. And even though she had won, others she knew had lost their own lives when her alternative actions got her out of death, got Atlantis out of trouble...but as long as she was alive, she would keep Atlantis alive, and as many of her people as possible. It wasn't as if she had a choice. Not really.
