Rating: G

Er. I figured Teyla has an oral culture.
Mission Report [ 2.5mb mp3 ] Zipped.
I can sing this high mind rhyme
The day was long
The sky was fine
We spread our hands and our smiles wide
Our jewels reflected in their eyes
Ragged and thin they took us in
And washed our bodies from their water skins
We took their comfort and gave them toys
We kissed their girls
And beat their boys
Oh, ho, how can we go?
How can we travel with our cloak of woe?
How can we meddle in these hungry lives?
Bellies so full and our clear blue skies
Oh the hearth is cold and the wraith are blue
Ring of the ancestors sky is too
What's done is done
That war is won
And guilt is the indulgence of the favoured son
The day was long
The sky was fine
We spread our hands and our smiles wide
And I made a sort of vid to go with it:
video [ 16mb divX , 10mb .m4v , 57mb .mov ] Zipped.

Date: 2006-08-26 01:55 pm (UTC)Things that struck me especially:
a) the way at first it seemed like the Genii were the shark, but by the end both words & images made it seem like the team (esp. Sheppard) is the shark.
b) Sora!! (I am a total Teyla/Sora shipper)
c) the music reminds me of the music that came along with the first edition of Ursula LeGuin's Always Coming Home (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0520227352/), which would be a wonderfully ironic/appropriate title for this, too.
d) This is the fan work Rachel Luttrell would most like/deserve to see, IMHO.

c) I haven't heard this (that I know of; I probably HAVE heard it somewhere because I adore U K LeGuin and try to pay as much attention as I can to her) but you're the second person to mention it so there must be something there!
d) Oh, God. I hate to think of the showside people seeing ANY fandom stuff (I don't engage with the actors) , but I understand you meant this as a compliment and I thank you for the sentiment. :)

Date: 2006-08-26 03:08 pm (UTC)This is absolutely fantastic. The song and how it's composed it; the intertwining of the counter-melodies. (And your whoop at the start just makes me smile.) I always loved the 'cultural' music we studied at school and this hits that exact spot. It works just so well as one of the Athosian's songs and tales.
And then the vid! The way the images flow with the music and the overlaying corresponding to the melodies is just perfect, as are the particular images you chose. I have particular love for the effects on the first scene of the team, and then later on with the Genii and the team and the sea.
Amazing work. (And you have one lovely voice!)

Date: 2006-08-26 07:28 pm (UTC)*g* I suspect the 'cultural music' you learnt at school is actually just what I would call music. *is English* It's a round so the idea is that all the lines can basically be overlaid onto any other line so you can pick it up and add to it easily. So, I guess...imagine them all sitting in a circle and the song building as it goes round? In the show they have the Athosians revering the circle/ring and...stuff! *facepalm*

Date: 2006-08-26 07:56 pm (UTC)The fiddles are Nordic keyed fiddles mainly, also some plucked violins. It's really Norse/English rather than Celtic, I think. With a funk beat. *g*
I imagine this to be sung in the round, like a cycle? So it could be added to after every mission - a new verse, I mean.
