The battle for the gate room is over before it’s even begun.

As he turns to fire, he knows it’s a lost cause. He yells at them all to fall back. They split like the Red Sea, half of them heading through the corridors that lead to the living quarters, the rest following him out through the hallway that leads to the infirmary then the labs.

He has Weir with him, and McKay, and the Athosian woman Teyla. She still has a hand around the boy’s wrist as he screams for his father. But they can’t stop, not if they want to live. They still might not but he’s damned if he’s going to give in without at least trying.

The marines at their rear are laying down fire to cover their retreat. As they reach the sick bay, they almost knock Carson Beckett over. He tells the doctor to grab his medical staff and whatever supplies are at hand – right fucking there, not locked in cabinets or in the process of being unpacked – and to run.

The labs are next but most of the scientists seem to be AWOL; he finds Kavanagh under a desk and some other blonde woman poised to take his head off with a hammer. She comes; Kavanagh doesn’t. His choice.

They’ve gone another corridor before they hear his screams, somehow louder than the gun fire.

The jumper bay is next. He’s got everyone he can himself and over the radio he yells to anyone still alive to listen to get there. Find someone with the gene and stick to them and within fifteen minutes he’s going to be talking some first time pilots through a crash course in flying a puddle jumper. After that, he doesn’t know. But if they don’t get out of the city there won’t be any after that.

He doesn’t have time to think about how wrong it’s all gone when the first of the Wraith get through the doors to the bay. They’re firing those energy weapons and the marines are dropping all around him. He urges the rest into the nearest jumper; even if anyone else reaches the bay now they’ll run straight into the Wraith. He yells a warning over the radio to keep clear of the bay, find somewhere to hide. He knows he’s leaving people behind but he can’t help them if he’s dead and he has people with him to worry about. Once they’re clear, he’ll be back.

But to what, he doesn’t know, because no one is answering him and all he can hear are screams.

The puddle jumper doors are closing when one of them manages to get inside. Teyla is on it in a second, fighting for all she is worth. Even from the pilot’s chair he can hear it snap her neck, hear McKay’s horrified cry. But he and Carson jump up to at least try and stop it and he sets the jumper to hover while he grabs his P90 and turns and fires.

He hits Beckett but the doctor is already dead, hair white and skin flaking from his body. Most of the shots hit the Wraith before it can drain McKay. Finally it falls. That’s when something hits the outside of the jumper and claw like hands are prying the doors open. He should have hovered higher, he guesses, but it doesn’t matter now.

He fires again, as long as he can but in the end he’s out of ammo and there are just too damn many of them. He doesn’t even have any left to take out the people with him.

So ends their first day in Atlantis.

Wow, I think I was traumatized by this. In a good way. It reminds us it's pretty miraculous that the expedition made it past the first year.
