Challenge: Left Behind
The eighth time Daniel Jackson came to Atlantis "just for a visit" and brought a team of assorted linguists and archeologists for training, John Sheppard called a meeting.
He’d been planning this meeting for a while – since they’d found the second fully-charged ZPM and a cache of drones, to be exact. A few months after he’d first started thinking about it, Stargate Command had officially listed Atlantis as a colony and that had cemented the plan in his mind.
It was time to leave Atlantis.
He’d been getting twitchy, feeling the same way he had the few times he’d returned to Earth over the past five years. Atlantis was filling up with troops and scientists and–over his protests–tourists, of all things. And yes, he was listing Jackson as a tourist. The man had stopped just short of asking John to take his picture in front of a frieze, once.
Add to that the cooing noises Rodney and Elizabeth had been making over the maybe-Furling city Jackson had found references to, and Ronon and Teyla’s growing disgust with the way Pegasus politics were shaping up with the Wraith mostly gone, and John didn’t think he’d have much opposition to the idea of moving on.
To be fair he’d invited all the remaining members of the original expedition to the meeting, although he was pretty sure most would choose to stay. He also figured Lorne should have some warning before the command team just up and left the entire galaxy.
John stood in front of the small group that assembled in the mess that night. “We found Atlantis,” he said. “We searched and searched and took a big chance, and we found Atlantis.” As he spoke, he saw understanding and approval in the eyes of those who mattered most to him.
“We found the Ancients,” he said. “And they weren’t all they were cracked up to be.”
“We found the Asgard and the Nox, and while they’re nice folk, they’re not terribly helpful.” This he knew second-hand, but that didn’t make it incorrect.
“Atlantis isn’t on the verge of destruction anymore. She can survive without us.” He got nods from Rodney and Radek on that one, and a smile from Elizabeth.
John leaned back against a table and tried not to look like he was fidgeting with excitement. “So,” he said. “Nibiru. How ‘bout it?”
He didn’t have to say anything more.

Date: 2006-12-29 03:09 pm (UTC)Nicely handled. I didn't see the twist coming at all.
But, Nibiru?! I can just imagine Rodney's reaction.

Thanks.

Date: 2006-12-30 06:19 pm (UTC)I'm sure Gateworld.net's Omnipedia has something on it.
Anyway- I can see them going after Nibiru. They found one lost city and race, why not go after a planet and another race?

Date: 2007-01-01 09:35 am (UTC)It reminds me of the last episode of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor television series for some reason. Also the beginning of the story of Pecos Bill.
These are good things, in case it isn't clear.
