Pairing: N/A, John and Rodney and Carson friendship fic
Word Count: 413
Summary: Carson's last story is returned to Rodney.
NOTES: This was an idea from my husband -- he plotted it all out and asked me to write it for him. So, darlin', this one is for you.
“Doctor McKay?”
Rodney looked up at the too-starched scientist standing there. “What do you want ow?”
“This came on the Daedalus. I thought you might like to see it.”
“And why would I be interested in this?”
“It's something from the estate of Carson Beckett.”
He turned and frowned. “What? Let me see.” The scientist handed it over, and Rodney's eyes went huge as he realized what he was seeing. “How many people have seen this?”
“I'm not sure,” she replied. “I haven't.”
He nodded. “Thanks.”
Blinking, surprised at the gratitude, she smiled and nodded before she retreated.

John looked up as his door opened. “Hey, what brings you here?”
Rodney handed him a sheaf of papers. “That... that Sunday, when Carson asked me to go fishing with him? He... he said he was stuck on a story he was working on and wanted my input. I knew he was working on one – he was always working on one. He'd finish one and start another. When he got stuck, he'd ... we'd ... plot and plot until we got the block dissolved. I... I should have gone with him.”
“Rodney, we've been over this.”
He sighed. “Just.... read that.”
John's eyes went to the paper, and his eyebrow quirked upward. “'Across the Galaxies: an Interspecies Love Story'?”
“Just read it. Silently, if you don't mind.”
John began, and both eyebrows arched as his jaw lowered in surprise.
“They weren't all like that,” Rodney was quick to interject.
“A Wraith?” John gasped.
“I don't know how it would be possible either, but--”
“A Wraith?” John repeated. “He wrote a story about a human woman and a Wraith?!?”
“See why he was stuck on a plot point?”
“Good grief,” John sighed, putting the story aside.
“I don't know what to do with this,” Rodney said. “I know I'll keep it because it's something Carson did, but I don't know if I should try to finish it or--”
“Don't,” John interrupted. “Just... keep it as it is. I think he'd like it that way – his last mystery.”
That made Rodney smile.
“You know,” John said, shaking his head, “this was something about Carson that I could have gone to my grave and been happy not knowing about.”
“I know,” Rodney chuckled. “It was our secret, his and mine. He didn't even tell me what this one was about.”
“I can see why!” John spluttered.
And for some reason, that made Rodney laugh till he was wiping tears.

Oh, man; I never thought I'd be reading a "Sunday" epilogue with a big stupid grin on my face.
And there's a little voice in my head saying, "You're a doctor, not a writer!" I bet Rodney used to say that to Carson.
