Animal

“Rodney!” Teyla’s voice ripped through her throat as she rushed to her fallen teammate.

The beast blocked her way, pacing in front of him, randomly flicking a blood-drenched paw in his general direction to make him flinch and moan again. She raised her weapon and cursed in the Ancient tongue as it jammed once again, the scientist’s words of energy fields, ions, and corrosion coming back to haunt her.

Tossing the useless contraption to the side, she grabbed her blade and a large stick and began to circle ‘round. As expected, the animal followed her warily, not trusting the being not already felled at its feet. She jabbed with the branch and it launched itself at her, tooth and claw and fetid breath surrounding her. She swung again and again, feeling her blade graze across fur, but never reaching deep enough to cause the necessary harm.

She heard Rodney’s moans as Sheppard dragged him to safety, prayed it was enough. She did her duty though, distracting the beast until she felt its weight upon her, pain ripping into flesh. A primal roar and the gurgle of blood were her only warning before the animal was abruptly tossed away from her, landing in a crumpled heap at the other side of the clearing.

“You okay?” Ronon asked, wiping his own blade free of gore.

She looked to her fallen friend, ignoring her own injuries, and nodded. Taking her teammate’s offered hand, she hoped only one life would be lost this day.

Vegetable

“Where’s the med kit?” Sheppard demanded, patting down his vest for the few emergency supplies he always carried.

“Back at the Jumper,” Ronon replied. “Can get it if you need it,” he offered.

John looked up at him incredulously. Of course he needed it. Rodney was laying half on top of him, bleeding profusely from multiple puncture wounds, not to mention the gashes caused by that thing’s teeth.

He caught Teyla’s subtle shake of her head and remembered exactly why he should not take the offer lightly: The Jumper was toast, crashed and broken and currently being used as a den for more of those things that attacked them.

“We will use what we have and make do with traditional methods until help arrives,” she advised him, already dumping out her own pockets.

Sheppard could see blood dripping down her sleeve and knew it was not just from their teammate. “Save some of that for yourself,” he directed, trying to think how to maximize what little they had and not have Rodney bleed out in the process.

“I am fine,” she insisted, grunting as Ronon grabbed what was obviously her injured arm to expose and clean the wound.

“Terub root?” he guessed, using a cloth to wipe away the blood.

“And lingver leaves,” she agreed. “Can you find them?” she asked, tossing John her supplies, keeping only an antiseptic wipe for herself.

Ronon must have been confident he could because he left as Sheppard protested, “Teyla, you need more than that.” He cringed as one of the gashes was revealed, jagged and angry and looking to need more than a few stitches.

“I am fine,” she repeated, kneeling beside him. Before he could say anything further, she started in on one of the many tears lining Rodney’s left side. He took the hint and set to work on the right, trying to clean and bind as much as he could, but feeling his stomach drop as he noticed the bandages and wipes dwindle further.

The Satedan did not take long to return with a handful of what looked to be twigs and leaves. “This enough?” he asked, showing his offerings.

Teyla eyed the amount critically as John shook his head and asked, “For what? A salad?”

Teyla ignored him and nodded. That was apparently that as Ronon kneeled beside the smaller woman, broke one of the twigs in half and started smearing the sap on one of her wounds. “That is so unsanitary,” John winced, watching as they used one of the leaves to bind everything in place.

“It may not be your antibiotics, but it will do,” Teyla assured him.

John sighed and muttered, “McKay’s going to love this.”

Mineral

It was several hours before Rodney was conscious enough to know anything had happened. By that time, Ronon had carried him to what passed for a cave on this planet as, oddly enough, the beasts stayed away from them and preferred to nest in pits they dug for themselves.

“Where am I? And why do I smell like my sister’s kitchen?” he groaned, attempting to sit up.

Ronon placed a hand in the middle of his chest to stop the movement. “Stay still, you’re hurt,” he directed.

“There’s a newsflash,” the scientist rolled his eyes, wincing at even that little bit of effort. “Where are the others?”

Ronon glanced to where Sheppard stood at the cave entrance, messing with his radio, a pile of rocks at his side in case the beasts ventured too close. Beside him, Teyla still slept from the arca root he slipped into her canteen. “They’re here and well enough,” he assured him, offering a sip of his own flask.

“And the cat-dog-bear thingy with the claws?” McKay asked once he swallowed.

“Dead,” Ronon promised. He eyed the injured man critically, taking in the paler than usual color and the blood seeping through one of the leaves. It would need to be changed again, but was doing a better job than the first few bandages. “They don’t seem to like this cave, so we’re good for now,” he added as reassurance.

Rodney looked around briefly before muttering, “Good cave,” and patting the rock beside him. Another yawn and he drifted to sleep once more.

“Get through?” Ronon asked, sensing Sheppard hovering over his shoulder.

“Lorne and his men are on their way now,” Sheppard affirmed, plopping down beside him, a rock still in his hand. “Looks like we made it.”

Ronon nodded. Of course they did.
