Rating: Gen/ PG
Category: Futurefic, gen, family, minor cross-over of a sort
Words: ~ 725
Notes: Apparently, my muse has decided that I've got to write at least two stories per challenge, not counting the vacation challenge, even though I'm in the middle of a totally separate story that needs to be updated desparately. Set in the same 'verse as "Hushabye Mountain", "Home, Sweet Home", "Laughs of Sorrow", and "Tears of Joy". Hmm... I should probably think up a name for this 'verse... Any suggestions? As this is a futurefic, Lorne is now a Lt. Col., and Shep is a full-bird Col. Oh, and Weir is still alive. Also features mentions of a character from another 'verse that's found on my ff.net account, which technically makes this a cross-over of sorts, but my theory is that SG-1 (Both current and old members, as well as spouses/families) simply "retired" to Atlantis once they felt they were done with the SGC. Also, Lorne is a natural ATA Gene carrier in this 'verse, 'cause I'm not sure if the therapy would carry over to a retrovirus'd carrier's kids. Right. Enough ramblings, on with the story!
'Lorne!'
Lieutenant Colonel Evan Lorne poked his head out of his office, responding to the summons of one Doctor Rodney McKay, who was pulling a dark-haired boy of about seven down the hall by one wrist. McKay looked pissed, and Evan had to stifle an amused smile at the slightly exasperated look on the physicist's young captive.
'Yeah, McKay?' Evan replied, stepping out of his office and into the hall. 'Is something wrong?'
McKay narrowed his eyes at him, focusing his glare even further.
'No, everything's peachy. Of course there's something wrong.' McKay snapped, a slight growl in his voice. 'I found him in my lab, messing with Ancient devices that he shouldn't be touching.'
Evan frowned. 'Did he activate any of them?'
'Only one that was a hologram projector of sorts.' McKay said, and then shook his head. 'It doesn't matter. You need to keep a better eye on him. Isn't he supposed to be in day-care or something, and not in my lab?'
'He hasn't been in day-care since he was five, and school's out for the day.' Evan turned to the young boy. 'Right, Jake?'
The boy nodded. 'Yeah, Dad. I wasn't doing anything wrong. Besides, 'Lena said that-'
'It doesn't matter what Elena said, Jake. If Doctor McKay tells you not to go in his lab, you listen, okay? There's still a lot of stuff here that we don't know about, even though we've been here for so long.' Evan said, motioning for Rodney to release Jake. 'Besides, if your mom found out you were messing around with some Ancient tech and got hurt from it, neither of us would hear the end of it.' Both Lornes grinned at the image of Doctor Sasha Barnes-Lorne yelling, her Kentucky accent deepening with the rising level of her exasperation.
Evan looked over at McKay. 'Look, Rodney, I'll try and make sure that the kids know not to go in your labs, but maybe it'd be a good idea to have the doors only recognise the adult members of the Base, unless it's an emergency. I can talk to Colonel Sheppard and see if he'll okay it. Oh, and by the way, Sasha wanted me to ask you if you and Allie wanted to have dinner with us. The Colonel and Elizabeth are going to be there, as well as Ronon and Teyla, Radek and Katya, and Carson and Lexi. Riley Jackson said she'd be happy to take over baby-sitting duties for the night 'cause she doesn't have any pressing matters to deal with on the mainland, and Daniel's apparently deep into a translation of some sort, and isn't expected to surface any time soon.'
McKay shrugged, thinking it over. 'I'll ask, but I'm not sure. What time would you want us, and where?'
'The old mess hall, and I think Sash said about 7:00 or so.'
'I'll let you know before then. I've got to go find Radek and ask him what he's been telling that daughter of his...' McKay muttered, and Evan laughed.
'Don't be too harsh on him.' he said jokingly, and McKay shook his head.
'Please, we've known each other for what, ten, twelve years now? I don't think he takes me all that seriously by now.'
'Yeah. Well, at least you can still put the fear of McKay into the newbies.'
'There is that.' McKay agreed, and with a short wave, turned and went back towards the labs, hand tapping at his radio headset. Evan watched him go, and then turned to see Jake looking up at him.
'Alright, Scout, let's go find your mom, and then we can get something to eat.' he said, reaching out and ruffling his son's messy dark red-brown hair. Jake mock-scowled, his grey-blue eyes holding no real rancour as he allowed his father to pull him closer to his side, one arm looped around his shoulders.
'D'you know what they're serving?' Jake asked as they walked the halls of Atlantis, heading towards the nearest transporter that would take them to the Life Sciences Corridor.
'Well, it's Tuesday, so I think it's Chef's surprise.' Evan replied, wrinkling his nose. 'Hopefully, it won't be soup again.'
'Yeah.' Father and son continued to talk, chatting about everything and nothing, just another part of their everyday lives in one of the most extraordinary cities in two galaxies.
