Never Been To The Moon
By Claire

Peter Grodin looked up as a shadow fell over the console he was working on. "Yes?"

"It's late." Rodney McKay was as succinct as ever.

Peter started to glance at his watch before he remembered it was somewhere in a box sitting in a storage facility in Colorado Springs. He'd been tempted to bring it with him, but his inner scientist had commented that it seemed rather redundant to take a 24 hour digital watch to a galaxy where you weren't actually sure how long the days were going to be. It had also mentioned the impression he might leave people with by wearing a DangerMouse watch probably wasn't the one he was aiming for, but he'd ignored that bit of the argument.

"Is it?" Peter turned back to the console and tried inputting another set of figures.

Rodney sighed, a hand coming down to rest on Grodin's shoulder, warmth seeping through the clothes Peter was wearing.

"Peter."

Grodin moved his attention away from the screen in front of him but purposefully didn't look at McKay. "Rodney."

There was a brief pause. "Okay, fine," Rodney muttered before expanding. "I want to go to bed and it'll leave a really bad taste in my mouth if I have to admit tomorrow that I wasn't the last one out."

"Last one?" Peter frowned. "But Dr Weir-"

"Went to bed over an hour ago," McKay cut off his protest. "And anyway," Rodney glanced around, "the systems will still be here in the morning."

Grodin raised an eyebrow, unsure whether it was surprise or disbelief he was feeling at those words coming from Rodney McKay's lips. And then he remembered who had been speaking to Rodney only scant moments before the rest of the Control Room team had called it a night. "Carson?"

Rodney nodded, an almost smile tugging at the sides of his mouth. "Carson."

Peter smiled. It sounded much more like something the Scot would implant in Rodney's brain than a thought that would dare to make it there itself. "Bed does sound like a good idea," he admitted

"Where are you?"

Grodin reached into his pocket and pulled out the scrap of paper with his room assignment on it. "D19."

"I'm in C13," Rodney said, leaning over Peter's shoulder to type a couple of commands into the laptop and watching as a map of the city appeared, two blinking dots marking where each of the men's rooms were.

Peter stared at the dot representing his room and frowned. "It sounded closer when Sergeant Bates described it."

"Think of it as good exercise."

Grodin stood up, the glare he was directing at McKay falling from his face as he started to sway slightly. "Oh." Maybe he was more tired than he'd thought.

Rodney's hand reached out, steadying him as he regained his balance. "That's it, come on."

"Rodney?" Peter glanced down at the hand that was wrapped around his arm and tugging him away from the console.

Rodney stopped pulling and looked at him. "It's late, I'm tired, and since I'm pretty sure neither of us can see straight, I wouldn't trust either of us wandering the corridors alone." He peered at the map, the two dots still blinking. "And, apparently, my room's the closest. Besides," he added, "it's not like it's going to be the first time we've been in bed together." Rodney paused. "Possibly the first time we're heading there just to *sleep,* but still."

Peter stared at McKay, keen intelligence still shining out of the tired eyes. "What if someone sees? You know what people will think if they see me coming out of your room tomorrow morning."

"You mean what if someone sees you coming out of my room tomorrow and thinks we spent the night fucking like mad minks?"

Peter winced at the turn of phrase. "I wouldn't have put it exactly like that, but yes."

"Well, I'd be flattered they thought I'd be able to do more in this state than just collapse in a boneless heap." Rodney glanced at him, rolling his eyes at the look Peter knew was sitting on his own features. "Seriously, Peter, even if we *did* spend the night having the great sex I know we can, what can they do? Slap us on the wrists and send us home? Elizabeth is hardly likely to use the first ZPM we find just to send the fags back to Earth." He paused. "Especially considering we're the experts in Ancient technology."

"We're not the only ones," Peter pointed out.

"No," agreed Rodney, "But we're the best."

The agreement of McKay's assessment stayed unspoken. "She might want to send us back anyway if we can't figure out these systems." Peter felt his body slide back into the chair and curious fingers creep back towards the laptop, jumping slightly when Rodney grabbed his hand.

"Not figure it out?" Rodney's tone was incredulous exhaustion. "Pete, we have the greatest scientific minds not on the planet here. Everyone on this expedition is more than deserving of being here." Rodney's face twisted slightly. "Even, and if you ever repeat this to anyone I will deny it, Kavanaugh. Not figuring it out just isn't an option. It never was."

Peter looked at Rodney, at the eyes that could barely stay open, marvelling at the man's ability to semi-rant even through near-sleep. "I've told you before not to call me 'Pete,'" he commented lightly as he got back to his feet and reached out to McKay.

"You did," Rodney answered. "And I ignored you that time as well."

Peter laughed softly as they headed out of the Control Room, not caring that they were walking closer than people who were just colleagues would. Tomorrow Doctors Grodin and McKay could come back out to play, but tonight the stars were different and Peter just wanted to sleep.

The cute! Yea!

That was wonderful. Although I think the others in Atlantis would completely understand and be jealous of a DangerMouse watch.

Oh, this is so sweet! I love the sense of knowing one another so well, that Peter recognizes Carson's influence on Rodney, that they read each other so clearly.

"Well, I'd be flattered they thought I'd be able to do more in this state than just collapse in a boneless heap."

Bwah! Vintage Rodney, arrogance and pragmatism all rolled up. *g*

Hey, for the sake of regularity, could you put "by [Authorname]" into the subject line? It'll save me a TON of time in the archiving! Thanks!!

This is lovely. Go you writing Peter fic. And this is the first time I've seen him slashed. Damn, now I want him to have sex. Sex?
