Notes: When I said I wanted to rework a Japanese fairy tale, gnine immediately suggested this one. It's stretching the challenge a bit - the inspiration isn't a traditional folktale but a children's story from the 1930s, "Naita Aka Oni" (The Red Ogre Who Cried). The original story is a short, sweet, heartbreaking tale of friendship. This is longer, and rather sillier. (Oni are Japanese ogres, and that's all the knowledge of Japanese folklore you should need.)
Summary: (AU) A tale of two unlikely friends. (And even more unlikely oni.)

Warning 1: At one time I read and reread these books (the first trilogy, anyway) on a bi-monthly basis, but that was in junior high - it's been a long time since I've even glanced at them. They were my introduction to the scifi genre proper, and will always be part of my mental fanscape, but the landmarks are fuzzy these days and I don't have my paperbacks with me. Wikipedia supplied some forgotten details, but there likely are other errors. Feel free to correct me.
