Typed very quickly before the idea left me…… or my boss discovered what I was doing, which ever came first. I think I stretched the challenge a little and maybe coherency while I was at it. But it’s been a while since I’ve written, so forgive me. Little nervous as this is my first flashfic......
Title: Fleeting Philosophy
Author:
ladydarkangel_1
Challenge: Dangling
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Spoilers: The Seige II
Summary: Fragments of philosophy float through your mind at the oddest of times
Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing.
Pascal’s Wager, his ass.
A complete absurd proposition. An all-or-nothing gamble with the highest of stakes and no way of knowing if you win until after the bitter end. No real way to change your mind if something goes wrong or you decide differently. Just a commitment of everything you are for the remote possibility of infinite existence in some form in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary with the harsh mistress Logic issuing dictums left and right.
Rodney never was good with blind faith.
“You let Sheppard fly that jumper?”
La Coeur a ses Raisons, que la raison ne connait pas.
It’s common knowledge that the heart and mind are completely separate and, 90% of the time, barely on speaking terms. Any scientist worth his grant knows that. But this little piece of pop-psychology masquerading as wisdoms dares to go further and postulate that the heart takes precedence and that the mind cannot fathom its infinite mystery.
Bullshit. The mind is the greatest of all the parts that make up Man, and the heart is the disobedient, unruly and headstrong prodigal son. It may stage a rebellion every once and a while but eventually it will defeated once more and placed back with it belongs, at Reason’s metaphorical feet. All those messy and inconvenient feelings like Hate, Fear, Desperation….. temporary. Fleeting. Occasionally overpowering but lacking in endurance.
Even Love; no matter how strong, how deep, how new, how shared.
Logic conquers all.
“There's got to be a way to- Major!”
Faith is when you believe something that you know ain’t true.
Attributed to a simple choir boy and supposedly the truest definition anyone’s been able to come up with. How basic. Trust against knowledge, against certainty. Soldiering on against adversity for a lost cause for no other reason then it’s your cause. Flying in the face of disbelief. Daring Fate. Defying Death. Courting Life.
Reaching out when you know that there’s nothing but air in front of you. Hoping…… praying…… wanting……
“They haven't detected my approach. Weapon is armed and ready. I'm going in.”
Fear is the mind killer.
“So long, Rodney.”
He reached out.
