Summary: Rodney gets a letter.
Somewhere between the myriad of briefings back at Cheyenne Mountain, someone had handed Rodney a large brown envelope from General O’Neill. Inside was a plain cream colored envelope addressed in a large, bold hand: Dr. Rodney McKay, Someplace Secret, c/o Major General Jack O’Neill, The United States Air Force. He had a letter from Jeannie.
Dear Rodney,
1. You’d better not be dead. If you get yourself killed, you are in SO much trouble. Whatever is going on, Wonder Boy, I expect you to emerge in one piece. If not, well – just remember that a pissed off McKay is a dangerous thing. Not even the afterlife can hide you.
2. Call me. I know it may be a while before you can; but, seriously – call me. We’re never going to be the Cleavers (or even the Partridges); but you’re still my baby brother. I hate the way we left things between us.
3. I’m glad you’ve found people to care about who care about you.
4. You’re such an asshole. (Really, you are. It takes thinking you’re going to die to make you get in touch?) I miss you.
Love,
Jeannie
P.S. If you’re really nice, I’ll show you the note from General O’Neill that came with your message. I take it he’s met you in person?
Once he was back in his room, Rodney picked up the phone.

Date: 2006-01-31 05:58 am (UTC)But she'll be just like all the other women in the show, damnit. --Obstructive and always wrong, dependent on the men to set her straight and tell her what to do and think.

Date: 2006-01-31 06:24 am (UTC)The thing is I loved this. And loved it x 100 because my older sisters would so send me notes like that (thought we get along and are Partridgy).

Date: 2006-01-31 09:21 am (UTC)This is exactly how Jeannie should be.

Date: 2006-01-31 07:44 pm (UTC)Of course, if David's sister, Kate Hewlett, plays her, she'll probably be younger than Rodney rather than older.

Date: 2006-02-02 12:57 am (UTC)I actually wanted her to be younger, but doesn't Rodney say that his parents already had what they wanted and he came along? I got the idea he was an accident and there was already a Jeannie.

Date: 2006-02-02 02:13 am (UTC)From SG-1's Redemption, part 2: "I had a not-so-comfortable childhood. My parents hated each other, blamed me."
From Hot Zone: "Listen, I have a sister. We’re not close – I don’t even know how you’d find her... She’s the only family I really have, so someone should tell her what happened."
From Letters from Pegasus: "My sister. Ford, if you cut everything else, just, um, keep this part, OK? Jeannie? This is your brother, Rodney ... obviously! I wanna s-say, um ... I wanna say something. Uh ... family is important. I-I’ve come to realise that because the people here have become a sort of a ... kind of a surrogate family to me. Now, I know what you’re thinking: I’ve never really been the poster child for that kind of sentiment but, uh, when ... when one’s contemplating ones own demise, one tends to see things more clearly. I really do wish you the best, you know, and I’m sorry we weren’t closer. Perhaps, um ... if by chance I make it out of this, perhaps one day we can be, and I would like that."
There's been a lot of fanon conclusions, but there's nothing in canon to indicate whether she's older or younger, whether she was better treated or more wanted than Rodney or anything. I'm beginning to like the idea that Rodney was, in fact, a mistake, but not a *late* child, but rather an early one-- his parents hated each other and blamed him because they'd married because of him and felt trapped in the marriage because of the kids, especially Rodney. Jeannie would then, of course, be younger.
