It was dark, darker than Rodney had ever thought darkness could be. And something about being trapped in the chamber that was more like a cave seemed to only make the darkness worse. He knew that the team would come for him, when they figured out how to break into the prison and free him. But until then, he had nothing to do. In his mind, his hope of returning to Atlantis dimmed.

*

Two days later, he found a small hole where the wall met the floor of the cave. It wasn't big enough for anything to pass through, but it gave him a means to count the days. As the light from outside started to fade, he drew a third line in the dirt, and curled up into the corner.

*

Another day passed before he found the rock. One edge was razor-sharp, and it had scratched against his leg. He turned it over in his hand a few times, the pain of it cutting his palm almost welcomed before crawling to the opposite side of the chamber and writing a note to whomever, if anyone, found him. The night birds started to sing their last song as Rodney dragged the rock against his arm four times. He could imagine what the blood looked like as it fell to the ground.

A few days passed, and all hope had dissipated from his mind.

*

Eighty-five days later and over 90 lines covering his arms, Rodney heard yelling and gunfire. The door swung open and Major Sheppard stepped through. Rodney blinked and flinched, the light assaulting his senses.

When John kneeled down beside Rodney, he was terrified by the blank eyes staring back at him.
