One

Curling up into a ball, Rodney wanted to cry. They had been stuck on one of the half-dozen backwater planets they had visited in the last few months for the better part of week and he just wanted to go back to the city, but this wasn’t their first visit and it wouldn’t likely be their last. While the people seemed to be stuck in the dark ages, Rodney had to admit for agricultural production, these people seemed to know what they were doing. So it was important to keep on their good side, but it didn’t mean Rodney had to like it.

He had been enlisted to help harvest the latest crops, which according to Teyla was apparently some sort of high honour and so Sheppard had forced him to go along with it. Now, five days later, he was ready to die.

Each and every muscle in his body ached and he was dirty and all he wanted to do was sleep, but if he even missed one shift, or spoke out of turn, they would loose a valuable trading partner and Elizabeth would have his head. So he had to keep his mouth shut and keep on working, but that didn’t mean that he would when he got back to the city. Oh no. Sheppard would not hear the end of this particular mission for a very long time, and once he found the time and could cook up something suitably nasty, Rodney would have his revenge.

Two

“So what you're telling me,” Rodney began slowly. “Is that you've had some sort of school girl crush on my team lead since the moment you arrived on Atlantis and not only have you managed to give yourself away to half of the senior staff and seemingly all of the city, but at the same time, James T. Kirk over there has somehow managed to remain in the dark? Am I getting that one right?”

Lorne nodded, managing by some feat to look even more pathetic than he already felt.

Rubbing his hand roughly over his face, Rodney resisted the urge to go on a further tirade as he realized that it really wouldn't help the situation at all even if it would make him feel better. God, he thought. I got stuck with the remedial class, didn't I?

Three

Earth was supposed to be a safe zone, clear of all the danger that threatened the Pegasus galaxy on a regular basis, but as Rodney discovered a little girl's birthday party was just as dangerous as an encounter with the wraith, if not more so.

"UNCLE MEREDITH!" Madison's voice was shrill and Rodney's head pounded.

"Yes, Madison?" he asked, hissing her name through his teeth.

"LOOK AT MY NEW DOLL!" she shoved a brilliant pink doll set in his face, grinning widely.

Looking up, Rodney was about to open his mouth, but at that exact moment in time Jeannie walked past and she instinctively reached a hand out and smacked him upside the head.

"Ow!" he whined, whipping around to glare at his sister, but the damn box seemed to follow him and as he turned back around he realized Madison was still there.

"Play nice, Meredith," he heard Jeannie hiss from the picnic table beside him.

Biting his tongue he smiled tightly. "That's very... nice Madison." he struggled to get the words out.

After several long moments, Madison nodded her head, blonde hair falling into her face seemingly placated. "Thank you, Uncle Meredith!" launching herself at Rodney, she flung her arms around his neck and squeezed tightly. Seconds later she let go and before Rodney knew what was happening, Madison was off amongst her friends once more.

Maybe Jeannie was right, there was something to that whole staying quiet thing.

Four

Compared to the trip through the wormhole, the flight to Scotland seemed to take forever. All Rodney wanted to do was sleep, but his brain refused to shut down, and no matter how hard he tried, how much medication he shoved down his throat, nothing seemed to work. Lorne and Ronon sat on either side of him, and even though he knew they were dealing with the grief they felt in their own way, Rodney wished that they would just shut up for two seconds, but he couldn't say anything. If he said anything at all it would make this whole absurd situation real and that was not something that he was ready to deal with, so he kept his mouth shut.

The funeral itself took place less than a day after they touched down. Carson's family was all there, countless relatives all dressed in mourning, yet at the same time there was a joy about them as they also celebrated Carson's life but Rodney stood back away from the crowd. Sitting on the far side of the pews, he listened as person after person made their way to the front of the chapel to continue.

Clenching his hands tightly into fists, Rodney dug his finger nails into the palms of his hands. Now was not the time to lose control, not when he had fought so hard to keep everything pent up. For once in his life there was no option, he had to stay strong, he had to wait.

After the service, they headed toward the cemetery for the final part of the service. The Beckett family plot held generations of Carson's family, and it was the one place Rodney knew Carson would want to be laid to rest. Again it took him to the very edges of his control to remain stoic, to remain as silent as Teyla had been on so many occasions before. He wanted to sat something, anything, to tell Carson's family how amazing he had been, how many times he had saved all of their lives, but he couldn't. He knew that if he opened his mouth everything would come spilling out and he couldn't do that to them. He had to hold back, and he did.

Five

Their second mission our after Woolsey has become head of the expedition was supposed to be a quiet excursion to a small back water planet known to Teyla as Ula. The people were kind enough, but as it turned out they had a heavy reliance upon a local herb, which when introduced into the system of a person who was not native to their home world had unusually hallucinogenic consequences. Or in the case of one Rodney McKay, it forced him into an uncontrollable violent rage.

"You're such a fucking cocky flyboy, but beneath all that hair gel you have UTTERLY NO BRAINS!" Rodney screeched from the railing that he was straddling, lobbing one of the lemons he had grabbed from the mess at John's head.

"YOU SHOT ME!"

John ducked as an orange whipped past his head.

"AND THEN YOU GOT ME SHOT IN THE ASS!"

This time, Rodney's aim was bang on and John ended up with a grapefruit the size of a small soccer ball hitting him between the shoulder blades.

"Stupid fucker," he hissed sharply, counting on the fact that Rodney would hear him from his perch on the balcony above.

"I HEARD THAT ASSHOLE."

oh wow, I am so bookmarking this. It was a great look at the snippets of Rodney's life, both happy and sad.

The last one had me rolling though. I guess after that little encounter John has just about the same opinion of citrus that Rodney does!

This was a great look at Rodney. I don't think he gets enough credit for the times when he does keep his mouth shut. And chucking citrus at John was a good way to end.

LMAO at the last one! also liked the one with Lorne. Did wonder if Rodney was going to be nice and match-make for a bit there - kind of sorry he didn't, really!

ooh, that's something to look forward to! I like Shep/Lorne, but most of it tends to be BDSM and I'm not fussed on that. It's a hard life!
